Summer Meets Fall!

It’s my favorite time of the year!!

October.

October has always been my favorite, and not just because of my birthday… (although when I was a child I’m sure that’s the only reason I loved October so much!)

But now I have new obsessions, such as every heirloom pumpkin I can possibly grow, fall colored dahlias, and that sweet spot in the PNW when you can have both pumpkins and dahlias ready for harvest in the garden.

Last year, I hosted a pumpkin arrangement class, where we built a flower arrangement in our hollowed out pumpkins. It was very fun, but this year I am feeling too busy to even do that for myself! What a whirlwind 2022 has been: The U Pick opened to the public, we participated in a couple of the the Saturday Markets at Central Park, and just this last Saturday we were a vendor at the First annual Tumwater Falls Fest (SO. MUCH. FUN. Don’t miss it next year!)

This pumpkin season is especially exciting because: I have black pumpkins!

YES. Black. Pumpkins.

They are saved seeds from a small variety, called Midnight. Next year I hope to grow more black pumpkins and even more grey, blue, and pink pumpkins.

(Let’s be honest: my goal every year is to grow MORE pumpkins the following year!)

Our U Pick still has a ton of flowers blooming, and we will continue to re-stock the pumpkins in the U Pick area until they are all sold out. We also have dried Corn Stalks available for decorating! I love setting corn stalks beside our front door, it feels so very “October.”

What’s your favorite way to celebrate Summer-meeting-Fall?

Do you love Pumpkin Spice Lattes? (I don’t… But I love hot coffee even more on cold mornings!)

Do you enjoy heirloom pumpkins, or just jack-o-lanterns for carving?

Are you hustling outdoors to enjoy the last of the sunshine, or already stuck inside with snuggly blankets and wool socks?

I’m looking forward to wood fires in the stove and crossword puzzles on the couch with the family. I hope your fall traditions have you excited for the months to come!
