When the wind blows…

We had a heck of a wind storm here a couple of days ago! Typically, we will have a few branches fall down when the wind blows; but when I heard half the carport roof rip off the posts, I knew this wind storm was serious!

We assessed the damage the next morning, and found that a very large tree lost it’s top, and landed safely on the ground. Where did it land? Right in the area my husband had cleared this summer, to make room for a new pole structure to house fire wood and our tractor. Thankfully, we hadn’t started any sort of construction yet, so the massive broken tree top did no damage whatsoever. We consider ourselves very lucky!

We also found that the windows of our greenhouse had been ripped open. Our greenhouse has 4 mesh windows, covered by a plastic flap that can be velcro’d shut on the cold days and rolled open on the warm days. With the wind bursting the velcro open, it ripped the mesh, and now we are unable to close the greenhouse up completely… which is unfortunate since it’s dipping below 25 degrees for 3 nights in a row this week!

To prepare for the cold, I put an extra layer of frost cloth over the ranunculus that are in the greenhouse. I’m sure they’ll be fine, but I do wish the windows weren’t ripped right now in the coldest part of our winter…

In happier news: I have sown hundreds of sweet peas seeds and they are popping through the soil in their little starter trays! I’ll take inventory and soon have sweet pea starts for sale. I’ll also be digging dahlias and taking inventory for a tuber sale in the very near future!

Here’s to hoping that’s the last of the wild wind for a while!
